John McLaughlin is a well-known Iowan and the former chief meteorologist at KCCI-TV in Des Moines. During his 25-year career, he helped revolutionize severe weather coverage by introducing the nation’s first high-definition Doppler radar system for local broadcasting.
A lifelong weather enthusiast, John’s passion began as a kid in Iowa, where he famously predicted a tornado in 1976 using his own observations and homemade computers. After retiring from KCCI in 2013 due to a health condition, he relocated to west-central Iowa and continues to educate pilots and the public about weather safety and storm systems.
